Lamai Beach Samui

Our Story

The original Lamai camp was established in the late 80’s as a boxing and weights gym up until 1998, when it opened as one of the first MUAYTHAI resort camps in the world.

A group of likeminded westerners passionate about Muay Thai looked at giving back to the motherland of Muay Thai on the beautiful island Koh Samui. The Camp has had the backing of the authoritative MUAYTHAI world governing body, the World Muay Thai Council (WMC), established under the directive of the Thai Government in 1995 with over 150 countries as part of the organisation.

Ralph Beale from the UK one of the founders has now made Koh Samui his home, after years of work and development in Muay Thai in the UK and Europe, from training his students and Fighters at his UK based gym to growing the national federation with the joint visions of the WMC and IFMA to Now call Muay Thai an Olympic recognised sport.

The true benefit is seeing people new to the sport grow the passion that helps shape and change direction in their life, starting a journey to a healthy mind and body that Muay Thai offers.

World Muay Thai Council Certification Since 1998

The WMC is the authoritative body for regulating Muaythai, both in Thailand and around the world. Set up by parliament resolution, the WMC is incorporated by the Royal Thai Government and sanctioned by the Sports Authority of Thailand, working together with the highest sport authorities of all member countries around the world to regulate all aspects of the art and sport of Muaythai. The inauguration meeting was held in 1995 at an appropriate venue, the United Nation Conference Centre with representatives from 39 countries attended. Presently there are 120 member countries registered with the WMC. The Executive Board and various committees ranging from technical and rules, refereeing and judging, medical, finance, youth, women, press and public relations, business and legal; all were democratically elected.

Camp Hall Of Fame

Valentina Shevchenko

Valentina Shevchenko for the last 10 years has been a visitor and fighter in Lamai Koh Samui. Training on camp during her Muay Thai Career, her self, coach Pavel Fedotov and her sister Antonina who is still in this years IFMA world championships have a great relationship with our trainers and head coach Nong supporting them in the IFMA world championships over the last decade ! Shevchenko has held several kickboxing and muay thai titles, such as the International Federation of Muaythai Amateur World Championships and World Muaythai Council and been highly regarded as one of the best female Muay Thai fighters in the world. IFMA World Championships Gold (2003, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2015)

Pidsanu 'Mardusa' Kunchat,

Often only going by his fight name, Pidsanu Kunchat, is better known as ‘Mardsua’, a name synonymous with “great” and “champion” within Muaythai circles, as a result of his achievements. It also means “tiger punch” in Thai – tigers being a highly respected animal in the Siam lands. Mardsua earned this name by demonstrating strength and courage throughout his fights. He also made a name for himself by defeating top Australian fighter John Wayne Parr, and by losing very narrowly to Yodsanklai.

Dzhabar Askerov

Dzhabar Askerov is a Russian Welterweight kickboxer fighting out of Bangkok, Thailand and representing Russia. He is the World Muay Thai Council’s Muay Thai Welterweight European Champion and K-1 MAX Scandinavia 2008 Tournament Finalist.

Nokweed Davy

Despite 312 bouts and his fearsome reputation in the ring, Nokweed Davy remained a strong silent type who never really talked about himself, nor less boasted. Kevin Siam, the stalwart Muay Thai correspondent for Siam Fight News, remembers him as much. Nokweed never asked for anything off anyone, never looked for money and didn’t like to share his boxing stories. He was shy of his fame but he loved his boys at the WMC gym who, like him, had a passion for Muay Thai. He was a man of few words. But, once the sweat in the gym started to spill onto the concrete, he was a beast with his fighters.

Camp Philosophy

At Lamai Muay Thai Camp we believe in Family. We create the best atmosphere for our campers to train and attain personal success no matter your goals. From a “first timer” to a seasoned professional fighter, our camp provides the environment for all to learn Muay Thai and be part of our close knit Community. We find once you come, you always come back to be part of our family for a lifetime.

Recent Reviews

The most cringe-worthy gym, which is suitable for a maximum of a week for beginners, even if you spend 1 year there - you will spar only using touches to the stomach, if you want to go to the bag - they will not let you do this - because you came to training and thus a year has passed and nothing has changed. The owner of the gym never said hello or said a word, when in the first gym I came across in Chaweng, the owner called me brother 2 times in the first 5 minutes of meeting. Here there are only fake smiles and they will never communicate with you, they only deal with their "fighters", with whom they hope to do business. You know my postal address there and you know who is writing this, because you did everything so that I left there and did not return, showing it with your whole appearance, creating situations and setting me up as if I did something wrong, that it is impossible to comment on this cringe. For example, one situation - I was running in circles with everyone else, a full gym of trainers at a morning training. There was a little boy sitting in the ring and I still don't know why he was scared of me when I was running past him - I wasn't thinking about him, or looking at him, or naturally touching him in any way. He was sitting a meter away from the circle where people were running and there were a lot of coaches around and they saw that I couldn't do anything, I was busy running with everyone. And from that moment on they all started looking at me as if I wanted to steal their breakfast and I just didn't understand what to do, I didn't know how to comment on it, because I still don't understand what happened. The following days they started constantly putting this boy in front of me and everyone was watching what I would do. They looked at me and kicked the bags with their feet, smiling... apparently they wanted to scare me somehow, I didn't want to play these games, but the thoughts in my head started to boil. It was a terrible experience, of course, but I wanted to come to real Thais and train with them, I wanted to do my favorite thing and I didn't do anything bad to anyone. I don't even have anyone to share this with, but I think this is the best place to leave it. And they started throwing me out of the gym, and before that I spent a whole year there and everything was ok. If you don't want to lose your money, time and good mood - avoid this place. The oldest coach Vorn - for example, he constantly smells of alcohol at 7 am during training. The coaches drink kratom constantly during training. You are probably there for the truth - here is the pure truth, as it is. Good location, but this place is exclusively for a narrow circle of its people. I swear to all the gods that everything I said is my truth and I have no way to refuse it.There was also a moment - in the first month of training I asked one of the coaches, like, what do you think, when would I be able to fight at the stadium - he said - in 2 years. You understand that 2 years is the same, that you can go home right now. What is most interesting is that sometimes during daytime training I was allowed to fight with stadium fighters and they all, in my opinion, lost to me, there was only 1 person. I do not pretend to be a champion, I just wanted to fight in a good place with good people and have the same opportunities as everyone else. And naturally, gradually my stay there became incomprehensible to me. I already had a visa, housing, I spent a lot of money and it seemed to me that they would tell me that I could fight in a month or 2, it doesn't matter. But it all turned out to be just ideas in my head. Before leaving, I went to the next gym, when I was already squeezed out of Lamai, and the Thai coaches told me - if you want, you can train for 1 week and fight at the stadium without any questions. I was told the same thing in other gyms.Read all the bad reviews, about how the coaches don't care about you at all.

This place is absolute 🔥. Ralph the owner simply can’t do enough for you. He will give you advice on anything. The 1 to 1 are excellent I’d strongly advise doing them. (It’s not expensive) I had bin/lek and wave all top guys. Now there two classes a day. From 7 am until 9am. One class is for beginners and intermediate, and the other is for advanced/fighters. They are conditioning classes. Now if you go there and you’ve been doing Muay Thai ask to go into the advance class. I’ve seen people having a bit of a moan on here when all you have to do is move class. The same applies for the classes in the evening. Advance class is 4-6 and beginners 5-7. You’re training with people at the top of their game. If you want to fight, or simply get fit and learn a few things on your journey this place is for you. I can’t praise the guys enough for how much they taught me to bring home and use. Highly highly recommend 🙏

Spent a week training here, loved every minute of it. I did a PT w Kru Ching first day and he was very welcoming, experienced and knowledgeable, I was in safe hands! All the trainers were amazing, friendly and classes were well structured. There’s a good sign-in system and an amazing fight gear store. I would have loved to stay longer but I’ll be back. Thanks Lamai MT 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽❤️

I can’t recommend this gym enough! From the moment I walked in, I was greeted with warmth and positivity. The coaches here are truly incredible—highly skilled, patient, and deeply passionate about Muay Thai. They take the time to correct your technique, push you to be your best, and motivate you every step of the way.The classes are not only challenging but also so much fun. Whether you’re a complete beginner or an experienced fighter, there’s something for everyone. The environment is super supportive, and the sense of community is amazing—everyone encourages each other to improve and succeed.A huge thank you to the staff and coaches for creating such an authentic and welcoming space to train and learn. If you’re looking to dive into Muay Thai or level up your skills, this is the place to be. Highly recommend!

We had an unreal experience here, both as complete beginners with zero fighting experience. We booked a private one hour session for the two of us. Our instructor, Bin, taught us the basics, from punching and jabbing, to kicking. The session was hard work but we were given regular pauses for water and to catch our breath. Bin was excellent - really patient and explained things well.Whilst I have possibly never worked so hard in my life, I felt like I learnt so much and am excited to come back and join in a group session! My boyfriend also loved it.

Good workout and technical drills, but usually too many people in the group classes, so only 2 rounds on the pads. The younger trainers usually came around the pair drills and corrected technique, but a few of the older ones seemed indifferent, so the atmosphere wasn't what it could be.

The best gym and trainers! I first came here 11 years ago having never done Muay Thai or even travelled alone. I stayed on camp, trained twice a day and met people from all over the world. The classes are for all levels and 11 years on I'm still attending and enjoying every minute.

Bajo mi punto de vista hay demasiada gente por clase. Creo recordar que eramos mas de 20. Los entrenadores van un poco saturados y no eran precisamente simpaticos o agradables. Serios y al grano. Está bien. Experiencia aceptable/buena.

I would rate this gym with 4 stars because they could do a better work with the group class. The group class are overcrowded, and i think the trainers don’t follow you a lot as they should do, and for a guy who want compete and want to do some training in the group class, the trainings are too soft compared to others thai gyms.About the private lessons, the trainers are really good, i had the opportunity to train with Jap, and he helped me a lot to become a better fighter and improve my weaknesses

I was overall quite disappointed with my 3 weeks of training at Lamai Muay Thai Camp. Having practiced Muay Thai for around 10 years, this was my first time training in Thailand, and my expectations were not met. There are about 5 to 8 coaches at each group training session, but once they assign an exercise, they don't move among the students to correct their techniques. They wait on the side until the time runs out before giving you another exercise. The group classes were almost all the same, with repetitive exercises, drills, and combos. As someone with a bit of experience, I expected to learn new techniques, but I didn't learn anything new. It was only basic and similar ones. The afternoon class (5pm to 7pm) is ALWAYS EXACTLY the same, with the same coach giving always the same exercises. After less than a week, I was already getting bored with this class but continued to attend because I had already paid for 3 weeks. Yes, you will work out and sweat, but there is nothing about improving your Muay Thai acumen here.I tried the advanced class a few times, but the coaches didn’t provide any advice, feedback, or tips there either. In 3 weeks, we did clinching only once in the normal group class! In the advanced class, there are always 2 rounds of clinching, but again, the coaches do not watch or correct you.On the positive side, the personal training sessions are good. You can tell your coach what you want to work on, and they'll teach you some good techniques. I can't help but wonder if they intentionally withhold advice in group classes to encourage personal training sessions. The facilities are good too, with ample space, several rings, and bags.

5 stars! I dropped two times on my 1 week holiday for 2h afternoon session. Really great versatile training. It's really popular but they have many trainers and as it was my first session since 15 years, trainers still had time to give me attention and give me corrections.

Zeitgleich trainieren dort sehr viele Weltklasse Kämpfer.Wir kommen wieder!

It was my first time trying Muay Thai and I was really impressed and scared before I started (I am overweight, I have several injuries and had never practiced any combat sport).I was advised to start with a private session and I loved it so much I booked one every day until I left Ko Samui.I had a kind, patient and motivating trainer who pushed me to do better and supported me through my training.I had such a great experience it made me want to find a club back home and keep training until my next visit in Ko Samui.Thank you so much for this wonderful experience.

Hey , Im Rud from Norway and im soon 59 years old. Ive been at Samui many years, driven by Lamai MuayThai, thinking im to old. In 2019 i went in and had the time of my life. Since then been training with these fantastic trainers. I come from TaeKwonDo, Karate and some other martial arts. I was surpriced how MuayThai wake up my instinct, old abilities and techniques.. My personality fits in to the group of trainers 100%. Fun, sweat and no tears😁 i Will forever train at Lamai MuayThai Camp when im on holidays. So thank you Ralph, Jack, Vorn, Joe, Pure, Jen, View, Seven and Kru Nong💪🙏 And not forget the Sweetheart in the reception... Advanced class is great if you are competing, high level training and coaching, and many skilled partners to spar with.Open class during dec-jan is too crowded, and mostly consists of drills with a partner and general fitness drills, not so much individual attention from trainers as hoped.
